Grade 1 Wraps Up Plant Unit with Spud Olympics and Potato Bar

spud-tacular learning in lower school

Our Grade 1 students recently wrapped up their study of plants with a fun and memorable celebration: the Spud Olympics.

Earlier in the unit, students explored the parts and life cycle of a potato, learning how plants grow and develop. To bring the lesson to life, they enjoyed a baked potato bar, which became a hands-on learning opportunity as students practiced explanatory writing, sequencing, graphing, and more while building their own potatoes.

The unit concluded with the much-anticipated Spud Olympics, a full day of potato-themed competition. The event even included opening and closing ceremonies, along with a presentation of athletes and flags. Students competed in a variety of creative events such as bobsledding, bowling, long jump, gymnastics, hockey, and more, while also practicing mental math by adding distances and times throughout the day.

Beyond the fun, the unit connected classroom learning to meaningful biblical truths. Through their study of plants and the Olympic theme, students reflected on abiding in Christ, the picture of death and resurrection found in seeds, spiritual growth and fruit, and the endurance and stability provided by strong roots. They also discussed discipline and training for holiness, perseverance through suffering, the difference between perishable and imperishable crowns, identity beyond success, and the stewardship of the talents God has given them.

The Spud Olympics proved to be a fun and fitting finale to a week of learning, bringing together science, faith, and a little friendly competition in the 1st grade classrooms.
